Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari reiterated Iran's force protection and security of the Strait of Hormuz and Persian Gulf region in a press conference on August 6, 2012. Saying Iran has full control over the regions waterways.
FARS news agency is reporting that Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari is saying “security of Strait of Hormuz fully depends only on Iran.”
The Strait of Hormuz is a passageway and chokepoint for 40% of the world's oil production, including much of the oil exported by Saudi Arabia.
"Administering (affairs in the) Strait of Hormuz and full control of the region lie in Iran's hand”, the commander indicated.
"Iran is the greatest maintainer and protector of security in the Persian Gulf”, he said.
In response to proposed U.S. war games, the commander was dismissive and said:
"Iran has seen so many similar stances of the US and Washington's decisions, moves and wargames have no impact on the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
In attempting to explain the arrogance of the United States, he said:
"The US imagines that it can affect Iran by announcing that it would stage a demining exercise, but this won't happen," the commander reiterated.
He also underscored that Iran cannot be bullied or threatened by anyone, including the United States. That Iran is very capable nation in terms of protecting itself.
In December 2011, Commander Sayyari made similar comments about Iran’s military capability to exercise total control of the Strait of Hormuz. “This is easy for us”, he said'
In a January 1, 2012 interview Commander Sayyari said: “We watch all the movements in the region, assessing , evaluating and identifying them. Then we get ready for any kind of threat from anywhere.”
The Iranian Navy Commander comments come at a time of increased tension over Iran’s nuclear program and allegations that Iran is constructing a nuclear weapon of some kind.
An allegation the Iran has repeatedly said is not true.
