UK Defence Cuts Revealed: The Infantry Battalions To Be Axed

Five battalions will be disbanded under planned reductions to the army from more than 100,000 troops to 82,000 by 2020.

The five infantry battalions that are to be scrapped as part of Government cuts.

They are

  • 5 Scots - The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
  • One Battalion of The Yorkshire Regiment
  • 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers
  • 3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (The Staffords)
  • 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh Regiment.

The battalions will be disbanded under planned reductions to the army from more than 100,000 troops to 82,000 by 2020.

The controversial reforms are being seen as a revolution and their success will depend on the ability of the army to recruit 30,000 reservists.

The army plans to lean heavily on reserves and they will be expected to shoulder a third of the burden of long-term operations.
