Marine threat: Russia to secure its ports from terrorists

The Interior Ministry is to spend $10 million on securing the nation's ports against underwater terrorists.

This will affect docks where nuclear-powered ships are based. The money will go on various kinds of equipment, including special motor boats, trucks and diving apparatus. These will be used to monitor situations both on the ground and underwater.

The move is part of a state program to secure transport hubs ahead of the APEC summit in Vladivostok in September and the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. It will cost an estimated $1.5 billion.

In February, the ministry purchased two underwater electric cannons. These cost $400,000 each, and are designed to stun the enemy with a powerful electric shock.
