Ukraine Eyes 30 New Vessels, Military Training Facilities

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense is aiming to acquire 30 new vessels for the country’s Navy by 2020, and to upgrade its training facilities under a program worth 500 million hryvnia (US $20 million), the ministry said.

The two programs are related to Ukraine’s ongoing military efforts in the country’s eastern part, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been combating Russia-backed insurgents.

Currently, the Ukrainian Navy "is actively involved in the anti-terrorist operation in the provinces of Donetsk and Lugansk, prepared to counter a seaborne armed aggression," the ministry said in a statement.

The planned acquisitions are expected to enable a "radical modernisation" of the Ukrainian Navy's combat capabilities, the statement said.

Most recently, the Defense Ministry signed a contract with the state-run Leninska Kuznya shipyard under which the Kiev-based shipbuilder will supply two landing craft to the Ukrainian Navy. Should the latest deal be carried out as planned, the Defense Ministry could decide to award further shipbuilding contracts to Leninska Kuznya. Some deals could also be awarded to the shipbuilding division of Ukraine's leading defense group Ukroboronprom.

In addition to developing the capabilities of the Ukrainian Navy, the ministry also wants to enhance the training capacity of the country’s military. Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak said that Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko considers improving the country’s military training infrastructure "a top priority." As a result, the country’s International Peacekeeping and Security Centre (IPSC) in Starychi, in Ukraine's western part, and its training units will be upgraded until the end of 2020, according to the minister.

Ukraine Switches to German Engines, Discards Russian Military Gear Amid Crimea Row

Ukraine’s leading defense group Ukroboronprom has signed a deal with German producer Deutz AG to acquire engines for the armored personnel carriers (APC) used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The new engines will replace Russian gear, which are to be discarded.

With the latest contract, Ukroboronprom is aiming to cut spending on new engines and ensure that the equipment used by Ukraine’s military complies with NATO standards, said Artur Heruvimov, the company’s deputy chief executive, as quoted in a statement.

The engines will be supplied to the Armed Forces' BTR-4 vehicles. The procurement will allow Ukroboronprom to save about US $25 million and use these funds to develop and produce new weapons and equipment, the statement said.

Ukraine has intensified efforts to replace Russian-made military gear with weapons and equipment supplied by NATO member states following Moscow’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula.
The BTR-4 is an eight-wheel-drive vehicle enabled with a maximum speed of 68 mph, according to data from Ukroboronprom.

Based in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, Ukroboronprom is a state-owned group that consists of some 137 companies specializing in manufacturing and export sales of aircraft, missiles, armored vehicles, ships, munitions, radio communication, and other types of arms and military equipment. The group was established in 2010 with the aim to consolidate the country’s fragmented defense industry.

International Volunteers and Local Organizations Help Wounded Ukrainians

Ukrainian organizations and international volunteers are helping injured Ukrainian soldiers get the medical assistance that they deserve. Volunteers from all over the world have played an important role donating funds and medical equipment for injured Ukrainian soldiers. This was stated by Olga Durbak-Chuyko and Sergei Marenich, representatives of International Association for Support and Development of Ukraine,” and Alexander Kurichko a representatives of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. International assistance for Ukraine started to help protestors injured on Maidan, and has now extended to Ukrainians fighting in the eastern part of the country reiterated the speakers.  In addition, European hospitals continue to sponsor injured Ukrainians and support their recovery and rehabilitation process.

Durbak-Chuyko stressed that the efforts of her organization hinges on the efforts of international volunteers. During the events on Maidan, Ukrainians and Ukrainian organizations wrote letters to people all over Europe, and “we received immediate funds,” she said. She stressed that medical support for Ukrainian soldiers participating in the Anti-Terrorist Organization is also necessary, as they are taking part in the next step of the true liberation of Ukraine. Her organization, which started its work unofficially during the time of Maidan, was registered by the Ukrainian government several months ago. Now, “we are providing medical assistance to the military, national guard, and the border and security services of Ukraine,” she said.

At the moment, the organization is trying to secure the transportation of a wounded serviceman to a hospital in Austria, and is involved in supporting the troops through the provision of pain killers, blood stoppers, medical kits, and other equipment. Despite the occasional problems of getting the necessary certifications for the importation of goods, the International Association for Support and Development of Ukraine is due to receive a special permit from Ukraine’s Ministry of Public Health.
Kurichko praised the efforts of Durbak-Chuyko and International Association for Support and Development of Ukraine, and stated that she has done more for Ukrainian servicemen than any bureaucrat in the government. Through her efforts, “people who come for assistance get assistance,” he said. He continued that a medical hospital for border guards will receive ten new beds on August 22 because of the efforts of the group.

Durbak-Chuyko said that Ukrainians should be proud of their country and the international volunteers who support Ukraine. Her organization has received 20 tons of assistance from German volunteers alone. In addition, the organization has coordinated the treatment of 71 Ukrainian servicemen in European hospitals. “The goal is to make sure that our warriors aren’t disappointed in us,” Durbak-Chuyko stated at the end.

UKRAINE ARMED FORCES
ON COMBAT ALERT

Ukraine armed forces on full combat alert

Ukraine put its armed forces on full combat alert and warned Russia that any military intervention in the country would lead to war.

After a more than three-hour meeting with security and defence chiefs, Acting President Oleksander Turchinov said there was no justification for what he called Russian aggression against his country.

Standing beside Turchinov, Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said he had urged Russia to return its troops to base in the Crimea region during a phone call with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and called for talks.

"Military intervention would be the beginning of war and the end of any relations between Ukraine and Russia," Yatseniuk told reporters.
