The Royal Navy announced that Portsmouth-based warship HMS Dauntless sails on Wednesday, April 4, for a six-month routine deployment to the South Atlantic, relieving HMS Montrose that is on her way back home.

The Type 45 destroyer “will maintain a continuous presence protecting British interests in the region, carrying out maritime security operations off West Africa and the wider South Atlantic” said the Royal Navy announcement adding that HMS Dauntless program includes port visits in both West and South Africa.
It’s the first operational deployment for Dauntless since she was commissioned into the British fleet in 2010. Since then she has been put through an intensive period of sea trials and training to prepare her for operations.
HMS Dauntless belongs to the new generation of state-of-the-art destroyers for the surface fleet, each of which at a cost of approximately £1 billion.
Her Commanding Officer, Captain Will Warrender, said that HMS Dauntless’ ship’s company has been working extremely hard over the last year or so to prepare for our first operational deployment.
”We are now ready to provide a reassuring presence in the region and protect British interests”, said Captain Warrender.
Her departure comes just one day before the 30th anniversary of when the Falklands task force left Portsmouth to regain the Islands on April 5, 1982. Then, thousands of people lined the seafront to see HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible leave for war.
