The Confederate submarine CSS H. L. Hunley was the first submersible to sink an enemy ship in combat; she rammed her spar torpedo with 90 pounds (41 kg) of explosive powder into the hull of the Union sloop-of-war USS Housatonic off Charleston, SC; Hunley was also sunk in the engagement.
