February 17th - On This Date - RN Submarine Service

1917 V2 Submarine HMS V2 launched
1942 Unshaken Submarine HMS Unshaken launched
1942 Unswerving Submarine HMS Unswerving laid down
1943 Virtue Submarine HMS Virtue laid down
1973 Sovereign Submarine HMS Sovereign launched
1864 Hunley The first successful submarine torpedo attack took place when the USS Housatonic was sunk by the Confederate submarine Hunley in Charleston harbour however, the force of the explosion was so great that the submarine itself was also blown up, killing all on board.
1943 HMS Splendid HMS Splendid sinks the Italian merchant XXI Aprile about 3 nautical miles north of Cape San Vito, Sicily, Italy.
1945 HMS Statesman HMS Statesman sinks the Japanese trawler Matsujima Maru No.3 and the Japanese coasters Nippon Maru No.19, Nanyo Maru No. 17 and Nippon Maru No.14 with gunfire in the Malakka Strait.
1972 Forth Renamed Defiance, depot Ship of Devonport Fleet Maintenance Base and parent ship of 2nd Sub Sqdn
1973 HMS Spartan Ordered from Vickers, Barrow by Admiral Sir Edward Ashmore after launch of HMS Soverign.
