August 3rd - On This Date - USN Submarine Service

  • 1905 - Keel is laid for the USS C-1 (SS 9)
  • 1944 - USS Spot (SS 413) is commissioned
  • 1944 - USS Springer (SS 414) is launched
  • 1954 - USS Barb (SS 220) is recommissioned for the second time
  • 1958 - USS Nautilus (SSN-571) is the first ship to pass beneath the North Pole, on a four day, 1,830-mile voyage from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Her famous radio message is "Nautilus Ninety North".
  • 1961 - USS Thresher (SSN 593) is commissioned
  • 1973 - Keel is laid for the USS Groton (SSN 694)
  • 1990 - USS Sculpin (SSN 590) is decommissioned
  • 1999 - USS William H. Bates (SSN 680) is decommissioned
