US presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has made a foreign policy speech in Jerusalem, calling the city ‘the capital of Israel’ and underlining the view that the American-Israeli alliance has to prevent Iran from “achieving nuclear weapons capability.” Also, despite promising not to criticize his rival, President Obama, Romney pointed out that the diplomatic distance between the US and the Jewish state “serves to embolden Israel’s enemies.” Israel is the second of three stops on an international trip for Romney, just under a month before he is formally nominated at the national convention in Tampa Bay, Florida.
Survey: Vast majority of Germans are unhappy with Merkel
Only one third of Germans still believe Chancellor Angela Merkel is making the right decisions over the eurozone debt crisis, according to a survey released by YouGov. The poll found that only 33 per cent of the country’s residents are in favor of Merkel’s current policies, and 44 per cent of Germans fear for their savings. The findings are likely to serve as a setback for Merkel, who will seek a third term in a 2013 federal election.
Mobile synagogues to appear on Russia’s streets
Russia’s Federation of Jewish Communities has announced that mobile synagogues are to hit the streets across the country in the coming days. American, European and Israeli rabbis and scholars on board are planning to visit around 50 cities. The trailers’ journey will last until August 15. The aim of the expedition is to share knowledge with Russia’s Jewish population and answer any questions they might have.
Gunmen kidnap Italian embassy guard in Yemen
Gunmen have kidnapped an Italian embassy guard as he walked along the street in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. According to AP, the Italian Foreign Ministry has confirmed the abduction and officials are working to secure the guard’s release. Kidnappings in Yemen are often carried out by tribesmen who use their captives as bargaining chips to force the authorities to provide their areas with services and jobs.
