Eight people injured in Ukraine central city blast - report

Eight people have been injured in an explosion on a tram in the Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk. A witness told “Interfax-Ukraine” new agency that a man inside the tram threw something like a firecracker, and two men got their hands burned. The witness also said the incident was followed by panic, and the tram driver immediately opened the doors and the passengers escaped. The information has not been confirmed officially.

Holocaust museum in Jerusalem vandalized

­Hebrew graffiti thanking the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler for the Holocaust and denouncing Zionism has been sprayed inside the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem. The red, white and black graffiti was signed "The global cynical mafia." Police believe it was perpetrated by ultra-Orthodox Haredi extremists.

Israel fears Syria’s chemical stocks threat

­Israel's deputy military chief claims Syria has the biggest chemical weapons stockpile in the world and missiles and rockets that can reach any point in Israel. Maj. Gen. Yair Naveh also said if Syria had the chance, it would "treat us the same way it treats its own people." Among other things, Israel is worried that such weapons could fall into the hands of anti-Israel militants should the Syrian regime fall down. Syria has not declared its chemical weapons stocks so their exact size remains unknown.

Protest leaders’ homes in Moscow being searched by police

­A search is underway of the apartments of Russia’s protest leaders Alexey Navalny, Sergey Udaltsov, Ilya Yashin and journalist Ksenia Sobchak . A spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee Vladimir Markin said it’s connected with a criminal case regarding violence that took place during opposition rally in Moscow on May 6. The search is ahead of a protest rally scheduled for Tuesday.
At least 59 killed in clashes in Syria – reports

­Overnight clashes between government forces and the armed opposition continue in Syria. The opposition Syrian Media Center says at least 59 people have been killed, blaming Damascus for their deaths. Media report the use of grenade launchers, mortars and other heavy weapons by the warring parties.

Montreal police make over 30 'preventative' arrests ahead of Grand Prix

­Montreal authorities have detained about 34 people and ejected several dozen more from the site of the Formula 1 Grand Prix on Sunday. It was done as a "preventative measure" and “in the interest of public safety” to avoid the repetition of Saturday night’s chaos, where police used tear gas and pepper spray against the protesters. "Some of those arrested were people police recognized from earlier student demonstrations that had been deemed illegal," district commander Alain Simoneau said. He added that people who were carrying objects including bricks, rocks or ski masks, could face charges. The search and detention operation began a few hours before the race. There was a heavy police presence at key transit points across Montreal, and officers conducted random searches of Metro riders near the race cite, turning round those who did not have tickets for the race.

Colorado and New Mexico wildfires trigger mass evacuation

­Hundreds of people were forced to leave their homes on Sunday as firefighters tried to contain wildfires in the US states of Colorado and New Mexico. The Associated Press also reports of wolves being evacuated from a local sanctuary. The Colorado fire is now raging in a mountainous area on a territory covering some 22 square miles. It has already destroyed or damaged 18 structures. In New Mexico, firefighters were struggling to put out a 40-square-mile wildfire near the mountain community of Ruidoso, but strong winds have grounded aircraft fighting the blaze. The fires started on Friday, and have damaged or destroyed 36 structures.

Police and protesters clash in Chile over Pinochet documentary

­Chilean police clashed violently on Sunday with hundreds of anti-Pinochet demonstrators in the country’s capital Santiago. Relatives of victims who suffered under General Augusto Pinochet’s rule and many others took to the streets to protest against the screening of a new documentary honoring the late dictator. Police have arrested several people and used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

Iranian women banned from watching Euro 2012

­Because of the possibility of “inappropriate” behavior when men and women watch football together, Iranian women have been banned from watching live public screenings of the Euro 2012 championship in movie theaters. "Men, while watching football, get excited and sometimes utter vulgar curses or tell dirty jokes," said Iran's deputy police commander in charge of social affairs, Bahman Kargar. "It is not within the dignity of women to watch football with men.” Besides being aired on the state television, major football games have traditionally been shown in Iranian movie theaters since 2010.

Six killed, 38 injured in attack on Shi’ites in Iraq

At least six were killed, and 38 injured in Baghdad in a sectarian attack on Shi’ite Muslims. Two mortar shells hit a crowded square where pilgrims were gathering to mark an anniversary of a Shi’ite Imam. Police say the death toll could still increase. Sunni Muslim insurgents are assumed to be behind the attacks.
