Naval Submarine Base New London has been forced to cancel SUBFEST, a family festival for Navy families that has been an annual event for 23 years. The event had been planned for June 28 – July 1.
According to a news release issued Wednesday, the event was canceled after the event lost its headline musical act and organizers faced “challenges” in contracting with a premier carnival company.
“We did not come to this decision without difficulty,” said base Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department Director Bob Kydd in a prepared statement. “We recognize that SUBFEST’s cancellation is a disappointment to the many Navy and community patrons who look forward to this signature event and have enjoyed it over the years. We hope they will take advantage of the many other area events and activities happening around July Fourth and the weekend after.”
He said the base recreation office is already looking into a possible future concert that could be combined with a fireworks show, similar to what was offered at SUBFEST.
