June 8th - On This Date - RN Submarine Service

1910 C34 Submarine HMS C34 launched

1913 HMS E5 An explosion occurred inside E5's Main Engines, resulting in the death of one Officer and two men. In addition, nine men were badly burned.

At 08.10 on the morning of 7th March 1916 the German battle cruiser Seydlitz sighted a submarine north of Juist Island. The cruiser and her accompanying torpedo boats dropped depth charges but to no avail. A few hours later another German cruiser, the Regensburg sighted a submarine to the east, not far from a German minefield of the Western Ems. E5 failed to return from her patrol and it is believed that this was the submarine seen by the Regensburg near the minefield.
1941 HMS Clyde HMS Clyde sinks the Italian merchant Sturla with gunfire in the Golfo di Policastro about 5 nautical miles from Maratea.
1943 HMS Trespasser HMS Trespasser fires 6 torpedoes at the German auxilary patrol vessel Uj 6073/Nimeth Allah off Toulon, southern France. The torpedoes miss their target.
1944 HMS Sirdar HMS Sirdar sinks a Japanese sailing vessel with gunfire in the Strait of Malacca.
1944 HMS Stoic HMS Stoic sinks a small Japanese vessel with gunfire in the Strait of Malacca.
1945 HMS Trenchant HMS Trenchant torpedoes and sinks the Japanese heavy cruiser Ashigara in the northern entrance of Bangka Straits.
2007 HMS ASTUTE HMS ASTUTE 'Rolled Out' from Devonshire Dock Hall after naming by Camila, Duchess of Cornwall.
