US navy ships visit Perth for Anzac Day

Four United States Navy ships carrying more than 4000 crew members will arrive in Perth this week for a six-day rest and recreation visit.

The 95,000-tonne aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill will berth in Fremantle on Tuesday, while fast combat support ship USS Bridge will arrive at HMAS Stirling in Rockingham.

Submarine USS Michigan arrived at HMAS Stirling on Sunday.

Some of the crew are expected to participate in Anzac Day services across the Perth metropolitan area and volunteer at community events.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin, where 91 US sailors died when the destroyer USS Peary was bombed and sunk in Darwin Harbour.

It is also the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea where Australian and US forces worked together to fight off advancing Japanese forces.
