Indian Police Probe Theft of Submarine Papers

Indian police on Thursday fielded three separate units to apprehend the individual who purportedly made off with sensitive papers on the country's new nuclear submarine, the Times of India reported.

Hotel video surveillance recorded the thief gaining entry to the room of a Russian naval officer. "He was seen carrying away some papers," an anonymous insider said.

The documents dealt with the atomic-powered submarine INS Chakra submarine, which India is fielding under a 10-year lease from Russia.

Authorities are probing whether the theft was an inside job. "Outsiders will not have any idea about the topography of the hotel as it was opened recently," a police officer said.

Hotel employees were alerted to the break-in when a clamor emanated from the room after the thief attempted to burglarize a locker inside. He had escaped by the time hotel staff arrived.

The officer whose room was burgled is part of a Russian group that traveled with the INS Chakra, intelligence sources said.  The officer and his colleagues are said to be in the country through the end of the month to provide guidance to Indian naval service members in operating the submarine
