Can You Design a Crest?

About a dozen ideas have been submitted so far for the crest of the USS North Dakota nuclear submarine being built at two East Coast shipyards.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — About a dozen ideas have been submitted so far for the crest of the USS North Dakota nuclear submarine being built at two East Coast shipyards.

A committee that will choose five designs to send on to the ship's crew is calling for more. Chairman Bob Wefald says ideas are being accepted until March 15. He says the ideas submitted so far range from freehand sketches to professionally done graphic art.

The crest is unique to each U.S. Navy submarine or ship. For example, the USS Minnesota crest depicts a Viking. The Navy and the ship's crew ultimately will decide on the crest design for the USS North Dakota, which is to be commissioned in 2014.
