Italy - QinetiQ to Provide Support to Construction of Onboard Escape System for New Italian Navy Submarines

QinetiQ, who lead the world in the provision of Submarine Escape, Rescue, Abandonment and Survival (SMERAS) Support Services, has provided Italian ship builder Fincantieri with specialist design and advisory services in support of the development of an onboard escape system for the Italian Navy’s newest submarines.

Fincantieri is one of the largest groups in the world in the design and construction of merchant and naval vessels. The company has a global network of 10 shipyards, two design centres, a naval research centre and two production sites dedicated to the manufacturing of systems and mechanical components. Its core business is the construction of complex ships with high technological content, for example cruise ships and large ferries. It also builds a wide range of military naval vessels , including surface ships (frigates, corvettes, patrol vessels) and submarines.

QinetiQ were engaged at the very beginning of the new submarine construction project conducting a feasibility study, providing advice, system and component evaluation, design and sea trails support. Fincantieri also made extensive use of QinetiQ’s facilities including its unique and specialised SMERAS equipment and bespoke evaluation software.
