USN Submarines - May 16th

1916 - USS L-11 (SS 51) is launched

1917 - Keel is laid for the USS R-27 (SS 104)

1941 - Keel is laid for the USS Halibut (SS 232)

1944 - USS Sea Cat (SS 399) is commissioned

1959 - USS Blueback (SS 581) is launched

1957 - USS Skate (SSN-578), the first submarine to be powered by the Submarine Fleet Reactor, is launched. This class introduces Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Mare Island Naval Shipyard to nuclear powered submarine construction.

1981 - USS Jacksonville (SSN 699) is commissioned

1996 - USS Flying Fish (SSN 673) is decommissioned
