The Army commander in Northern Mindanao has been relieved following
the ambush of the politician-wife of former Philippine vice president
Teofisto Guingona that not only killed two security escorts but also
wounded her in Misamis Oriental province.
General Emmanuel Bautista, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff, reported he ordered the relief of Major General Nestor Anonuevo, the commander of the 4th Infantry Division, whose jurisdiction covers Northern Mindanao including Misamis Oriental.
Bautista added he appointed Brigadier General Ricardo Visaya as the officer-in-charge of the command.
Anonuevo’s relief came after members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) admitted the ambush last week of the party of Mayor Ruthie Guingona of Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental that killed her two security escorts.
Guingona, also the mother incumbent administration Senator Teofisto Guingona 3rd, suffered bullet wounds in the arms and feet in the ambush for which the NPA had apologised.
Bautista said the ambush was a “wake up call” for the people to join in the campaign against the NPA, the armed component of the Communist Party of the Philippines, which has been waging a Maoist-style insurgency against the government for close to 44 years.
