The U.S.
Department of Defense said it has ordered 11 new jets from Boeing Co. at a cost
of $1.9 billion.
The
contract is an extension of a previous contract, which produced 13 P-8A jets
for the U.S. Navy that are designed to search for submarines, The Wall Street
Journal reported Saturday.
The Navy
has already said the contract is likely to extend to a total of 117 P-8A jets
which would replace its aging fleet of P-3 Orion propeller planes.
The P-8A
is a single-aisle jet that is a modified 737-800 jet, the Journal reported.
