Blast rocks power plant in Poland

An explosion has rocked a lignite power plant in Poland late on Tuesday causing the shutdown of three of the eight blocks and bringing the threat of a power shortage in the south-west of the country, Reuters reports. The blast, which was caused by coal dust, sparked a fire at the Turow power plant and four people were slightly injured. The plant’s director said the fire has now been extinguished. Firemen and staff are assessing the damage.

Injury toll after Hong Kong typhoon stands at 129

­A strong typhoon hit Hong Kong on Tuesday injuring 129 people and bringing business to a standstill, including the stock exchange. The highest hurricane signal for 13 years was issued as a warning before being downgraded. Subway stations became temporary shelters, while hundreds slept in airports after their flights were cancelled. Clean-up crews are now working to clear fallen trees and electric cables.

US CBO says Supreme Court Obamacare ruling to save billions

­The US Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says the ruling that upheld the Obama-backed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act but limited the expansion of Medicare will save the government $84 billion over the course of 11 years. The CBO also said that repealing the law would cost the government $109 billion, mostly because the law stipulates cost-saving measures and revenue increases.

Four children killed by Afghan mine

­Four children have been killed by a mine in Afghanistan’s central Ghor province, the province’s governor told Spain’s EFE news agency. The children, whose ages range from 10 to 14, reportedly threw stones at the mine, which then detonated. Mines planted by the Taliban have taken the lives of both servicemen and civilians.

Jennifer Hudson family’s killer sentenced to life imprisonment

William Balfour, the man convicting of murdering the mother, brother and nephew of actress and singer Jennifer Hudson has been sentenced to three life sentences by a county judge in Illinois. The actress was present in the courtroom for the sentencing. Earlier, a jury found Balfour guilty murdering Hudson’s mother,brother and nephew in 2008.Prosecutors said he killed them in a jealous rage after discovering that his then-wife Julia Hudson, the singer’s sister, was dating another man.
