US Navy orders Erapsco sonobuoys

Erapsco Inc. has been awarded a $25.4 million contract to make 4,628 sonobuoys for the U.S. Navy. Sonobuoys are sensors that can search for and detect submerged submarines.

Erapsco is a 50-50 partnership between Undersea Sensor Systems Inc. of Columbia City and Sparton Electronics Inc. of DeLeon Springs, Fla. The contract calls for 47 percent of the work to be done in Columbia City and the rest in DeLeon Springs.

Many government contracts must be renewed and funded annually, but money designated for this contract will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year, the government said Monday in its announcement.

Work is expected to be completed on the contract in June 2014. Joe Peters, USSI’s president, said the contract’s language restricts him from answering questions about the deal, including whether the company will have to hire more workers to meet the additional demand.
