Terry, who leads V Corps of Wiesbaden, Germany, succeeds Lt. Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, who is commanding general of I Corps and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
Scaparrotti commanded ISAF Joint Command and was deputy commanding general of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan from July until June.
“I want to thank my Afghan and coalition partners,” Scaparrotti said during the ceremony, according to a statement from ISAF. “It has been an honor and privilege to serve with you. Together, over the past year, we have made great progress. Our actions have delivered opportunity – opportunity for the Afghan people to secure their future, and opportunity for the Afghan people to secure peace.”
Before taking command of ISAF Joint Command and V Corps, Terry served as the commanding general of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. As 10th Mountain commander, Terry deployed to Afghanistan and served as commander of ISAF Regional Command South from October 2010 to October 2011. He also deployed to Afghanistan in 2006, as deputy commanding general of operations for the 10th Mountain Division.
“We left our comfortable homes and loved ones to become part of a team that will take the next steps in bringing lasting stability to Afghanistan,” Terry said in a statement. “Our success also secures our own nations by denying Afghanistan as a safe haven for terrorists. We will make a difference at home, in this region and throughout the world.”
ISAF Joint Command is responsible for the day-to-day planning and operations of the coalition efforts in Afghanistan.
