Fire, explosions in armaments warehouse in Central Russia

A fire has broken out in an armaments warehouse near the city of Orenburg. Projectile missiles were stored there, and the fire has set off a chain of explosions, with shells landing as far as 4 km away. A single soldier guarding the warehouse was concussed by an explosion. Nearby buildings have been evacuated. The Emergencies Ministry has sent out a firefighting plane to the site of the explosion.

US Supreme Court rejects appeals of seven Guantanamo Bay prisoners

­The US Supreme Court has turned down new appeals from seven foreign prisoners held for the past decade at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba. Even though the detainees have not been officially charged they have the right to challenge their ongoing confinement. There are 169 foreigners remaining at Guantanamo, including five men facing military trials for being involved in the September 11 attacks.

NATO halts air-strikes against civilian homes in Afghanistan

­The US led military coalition has severely curtailed airstrikes against residential areas and houses following the attack last week that Afghan officials say killed 18 civilians. NATO called the restriction “a prudent and logical step”. The alliance said they will continue combat operations against insurgents who hide in houses only if “it is a question of self-defense for our troops”.

Russian embassy takes measures to release ICC envoys from detention

­Russian diplomats in Tripoli, Libya, are working with other diplomatic missions to secure the release of four International Criminal Court envoys, including a Russian citizen. A team was arrested in the city of Zintan on Sunday while meeting Muammar Gaddafi’s son, Saif al-Islam. They were suspected in handing over “some dangerous documents”. The four have been put in preventive detention for 45 days while an investigation is carried out.
Islamist attacks kill 3, wounds dozens in Nigeria

­A suicide bomber blew his car up outside a church and gunmen opened fire on another service in Nigeria on Sunday, killing three people and wounding dozens. Islamist group Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the attacks. An eyewitness said angry Christian youths had assaulted local Muslims after the bombing. Boko Haram's insurgency has killed more than 1,000 people since 2009, especially in Nigeria's Muslim-dominated north.

Egypt Interior Ministry: Mubarak not in coma

Former President Hosni Mubarak is suffering from breathing and blood pressure problems, but has not lapsed into a coma, reports BBC citing Egyptian officials. Doctors have also defibrillated his heart twice. The 84-year-old is serving a life sentence for ordering killings of demonstrators during large-scale protests last year. His family has lobbied hard for him to be moved out of prison and to a military hospital.

Ten injured as tram catches fire in Ukraine

people have been injured in the city of Dnepropetrovsk in South-western Ukraine after a tram caught on fire. Police suggests gunpowder one of the passengers was carrying could be the reason for a small explosion and fire. It’s reported the 40-year old commuter dropped a container containing the powder which ignited.

Dozens trapped under rubble after landslide triggered by earthquake in Afghanistan

­More than 70 Afghan villagers have been trapped under the rubble after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake triggered a devastating landslide in Dara Azara in Northern Afghanistan. Twenty-two houses have been destroyed. There is no information about casualties.
