Thousands evacuated in Florida amid tropical storm

­Thousands of people have been moved to safety as a severe storm moves inland in the southern US, leaving devastation in its wake. Tidal surges and almost 70 centimeters of rain have hit Florida, threatening to worsen flooding along the Gulf coast. Tropical storm Debby has, however, been downgraded to a tropical depression after hitting the coast.

Eleven killed in road accident in Argentina

­At least 11 people have been killed, eight of them policemen, when a grain truck and two buses collided near Puerto Madryn in southern Argentina. Authorities say 49 people are now in hospital, most of them in a critical condition.

Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation sold for $2.1 million

A copy of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln has been sold at a New York auction for more than $2 million, AP reports. The copy of the 1863 document that ordered the freeing of slaves was sold to David Rubinstein, managing director of the Carlyle Group investment firm. This is the second-highest price ever paid for a Lincoln-signed proclamation after one owned by the late Robert Kennedy went for $3.8 million two years ago.

Eighteen confirmed dead in Uganda landslide

­The Ugandan government says a rescue mission has become one of  recovery at the site of Monday's landslides. Eighteen people have so far been confirmed dead after several villages were swept away on the slopes of a mountain. The exact number of casualties is unknown. The landslides buried houses in mud, and up to 100 people – mostly children – are still missing. Landslides are not unusual for Uganda. Dozens, and sometimes even hundreds, die in similar incidents every year.

Child dies in gas explosion in England

­A massive blast has leveled several houses in a residential area in the town of Oldham in northern England. A child was found dead and one man suffered severe burns in the explosion, which is believed to have been caused by gas. Around 100 nearby homes have been evacuated. Police say they are treating the explosion as suspicious.
