Taliban attack leaves at least 8 Pakistani soldiers dead
Several dozen Taliban militants have attacked three Pakistani military posts, killing at least 8 soldiers, Pakistani military officials said. About 15 militants have been killed in retaliatory firefights. Up to 100 Taliban fighters crossed the border from Afghanistan and attacked a patrol at around 6 pm local time. A spokesperson for the Taliban has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
One dead in storm-spurred Florida tornado
One person has been killed in a tornado tied to Tropical Storm Debby in central Florida. There were two tornadoes reported overall, and other areas of the state were hit by torrential rainfall and strong winds. The storm is predicted to make landfall on the Florida Panhandle on Thursday, though meteorologists warn it could still change its course.
NYC airport terminal evacuated
A LaGuardia Airport terminal was evacuated after a small fire broke out near a conveyor belt, NBC New York reports. Three people suffered minor injuries in the accident. LaGuardia Airport is one of the three airports serving New York City, primarily handling domestic flights.
Oil pipeline blasted in Syria, terrorists blamed
Armed groups have blown up a pipeline in the eastern Syrian province of Deir Al-Zour, causing a massive fire, the SANA news agency reported. There were no immediate reports of any casualties. According to officials it will take several days to repair the pipeline and put it back in operation. In a separate incident in the same city, armed groups reportedly kidnapped the city's mufti, Abul-Qader al-Rawi. Authorities have launched an operation to rescue the mufti.
Bus crash in Mexico kills 32
At least 32 people have been killed in Mexico after a bus turned over on a wet road in the southwestern state of Guerrero, Reuters reports. At least seven people were injured and are believed to be in critical condition, a Red Cross official said.
Train collision in Oklahoma kills 1
Two trains have collided near the city of Guymon in Oklahoma, killing one person. Three people are reportedly missing. The accident occurred east of Goodwell and had the potential for explosion, the Guymon Police Department posted on its Facebook page. Police have shut down both lanes of US 54 in Texas County from Guymon to Texhoma. Fire crews are working to put out a fire at the site.
Jerusalem police arrest two in social justice protest
Israeli police have arrested two participants in a protest against social injustice in Jerusalem, local media report. Some 200 people gathered at the prime minister’s residence and held a protest march to Zion Square. They then tried to access a light rail track, reportedly blocking an oncoming train. Police tried to stop them, and a scuffle ensued. The demonstration was held a day after a similar rally against social injustice and police brutality turned violent in Tel Aviv, with some 85 people arrested.
Newly-elected Egyptian president calls for unity
Egyptian president-elect Mohammed Morsi called for unity and said he carries a message of peace to world. In his first televised speech since being declared victor of the country’s presidential election, Morsi also stated he would respect Egypt’s international accords and would not have won the election without the “blood of the martyrs,” an allusion to the hundreds of protesters killed during last year’s uprising against longtime president Hosni Mubarak. Thousands of people have gathered in Tahrir Square to celebrate Morsi’s victory.
US federal judge upholds Indiana Facebook ban for sex offenders
A US federal judge has upheld an Indiana law that bans registered sex offenders from accessing Facebook and other social networks. Justice Tanya Walton Pratt stated in her ruling that social networks, chat rooms and instant messaging programs had effectively created a “virtual playground” for sexual predators to lurk. The judge rejected a class-action lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of a number of registered sex offenders, arguing that the ban prevented the convicts from using the websites for political, business and religious activities, and infringed on their constitutional rights. ACLU said it would appeal the judge’s decision. Federal judges have ruled against similar laws in Nebraska and Louisiana.
At least one dead in Kenya explosion
At least one person has been killed in a blast at a nightclub in Mombasa, the second-largest city of Kenya on the Indian Ocean coastline, a senior local criminal investigator told Reuters. Kenyan media report that as many as three people died in the blast. The cause of the explosion has not been determined. Kenya has been hit by a series of terrorist blasts since it got involved in a conflict against Islamist group al-Shabaab in neighboring Somalia.
