Italy school bombing the work of one man – Italian magistrate
The prosecutor in charge of the investigation into the bomb attack on a school in Brindisi that killed a 16-year-old girl says it was probably the work of “a single person.” Initial suspicions had been directed at the mafia, but the magistrate maintains their involvement is unlikely. Two suspects were arrested on Sunday morning in connection with the attack after being identified from video camera footage at the Brindisi school.
Ukraine ready to answer EU accusations – President Yanukovich
President Victor Yanukovich has stated that Ukraine will answer all of the EU’s queries, although he expressed concern that Eurozone governments were treating Ukraine “like a schoolchild.” Over the last two months relations between Kiev and the EU have been put under significant pressure over the controversial seven-year sentencing of former PM Yulia Tymoshenko. The EU has threatened Kiev with isolation if it continues with the case against the former minister. European leaders believe Tymoshenko’s criminal prosecution is politically motivated.
Flash floods kill 19 in Afghanistan, 60 missing
Flood waters have devastated Afghanistan’s northern Sar-e-Pul province, killing 19 people and leaving 60 missing. Government officials that over 1,000 houses have been destroyed and 10,000 people have been forced to take shelter in mosques, schools and a teacher training center. The North of Afghanistan is prone to flash flooding in spring due to heavy rains and snow melt from the mountains.
Strong earthquake hits off East coast of Japan
A 6.0-magnitude quake has struck 250km East of Tokyo at a depth of 10km report the US Geological Survey. So far a tsunami warning has not been issued. Japan was decimated by a massive 9.0 magnitude quake in March last year. The subsequent tsunami caused the Fukushima nuclear disaster, which forced tens of thousands of Japanese from their homes.
Deir al-Zor bomb attack “foreign plot”- Syrian govt
The Syrian government has said that Saturday’s bomb attack in the eastern city of Deir al-Zor that killed nine people and injured 100 was the product of a foreign plot. State news has dubbed the blast as part of a campaign funded by Qatar and Saudi to oust President Bashar al-Assad. The blast that struck close to an intelligence compound is the latest in a string of bomb attacks targeting military installations.
Police clash with protestors in Nepal – 52 arrests
Nepalese police have arrested 52 people in Kathmandu after activists used violence to try and enforce a general strike. Local officials say protesters attacked and torched at least a dozen vehicles that were violating the strike. The Indigenous Nationalities Joint Struggle Committee is staging a three-day nationwide shutdown in response to the government’s decision not to give indigenous status to Nepal’s Brahmin and Chhettri ethnic groups.
Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng arrives in US
Blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng and his family have arrived in the United States following negotiated departure from Beijing. The activist escaped from house arrest in northeastern China and took refuge in the US embassy last month sparking a major diplomatic standoff between China and the US. A United Airlines plane carrying Chen, his wife and two children, landed in at Newark Liberty International Airport shortly after 6 p.m. (2200 GMT) on Saturday, said a Reuters witness on board the flight.
Yemeni forces battle Al-Qaeda militants, 34 killed
Yemeni government forces carried out a US-backed offensive against Al-Qaeda militants in the south of the country killing at least 22 insurgents, Reuters reports. Some 12 Yemeni soldiers have been killed in the clashes. Fighting erupted late on Friday and carried on into Saturday on the outskirts of the southern city of Jaar, held by Islamist militants who have stepped up their campaign during months of political turmoil. "There is heavy fighting, and the armed elements are doing everything possible to stop the advance of (government) troops," a government official told Reuters, on condition of anonymity.
