Navy's NY nuclear training site reaches milestone

One of only two U.S. Navy nuclear training sites has reached a major milestone: 50,000 graduates since the facility opened in the 1950s.

Hundreds of sailors joined civilian employees and Navy and public officials Tuesday at the Kesselring Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit in Saratoga County to mark the graduation in March of Jenna Swindt of Santa Rosa, Calif.

The 26-year-old was designated the nuclear training program's 50,000th graduate since it opened in the town of Milton in 1957.

The program's graduates are assigned to the Navy's fleet of nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.

The Navy's other nuclear power training school is located in Goose Greek outside of Charleston, S.C. Each school trains about 1,200 students annually. Sailors spend 24 weeks going through the nuclear training program.
