Sam Salt RIP, Captain of the Sheffield was our Captain on HMS/M Dreadnought in '77/'78 during Operation Journeyman when Argentina was initially going to invade the Falklands. Our target was the Argentine Aircraft Carrier ARA Veinticinco de May (25th of May).
We were under orders to sink it just before Christmas '77. It was then decided by HM Government to inform the Argentine Government that there was an SSN in the area, we were ordered to show all mast's, All six tubes were loaded and flooded, prior to coming to PD to show all masts 1, 3 & 6 tube bowcap's were open.
Had the carrier or any of her escorts attempted to attack us were were prepared to fire those tubes. Weapons were ready behind rear doors for reloads.
However, when masts were displayed, the carrier group changes course and returned to port - we went deep, remaining at action stations and escorted them back to port.
MOD RN - On Christmas Eve '77 Captain S/M3 and his staff met with the families of the crew in the Drumfork Club on Churchill Estate Married Quarters(Faslane). They informed the families that the Dreadnought would be alongside over night and we would all be spending Christmas day with our families. As we had been away for 7 months at that time it was indeed good news for all the families, HOWEVER we were still on patrol over 8,000 miles away. In a nutshell the Navy lied to the families !!!!
