Residents Invited to Submit Design Ideas for USS North Dakota Crest

The USS North Dakota Committee, is looking for design ideas from N.D. residents for the crest for the submarine USS North Dakota.

"Although the Navy and the crew of our ship will ultimately decide on the crest our ship will carry, this is a wonderful opportunity for us to help create a unique identity tying USS NORTH DAKOTA closely to our state," says committee chair Judge Bob Wefald (Ret.).

The crest is unique to each U.S. Navy submarine or surface vessel. "The residents of our state are best suited to suggest designs for the USS NORTH DAKOTA that carry significance for the state," Wefald said. Whether it`s a reflection of the agriculture or energy industry, tourism or geography, the crest should share with the world a piece of North Dakota.

The committee comprised of Gov. Jack Dalrymple, Boat Sponsor Katie Fowler, Chairman Wefald, Vice Chair Bill Butcher and Adm. Bill Owners (Ret.) will pick the top five designs. The crew of the ship will then have the option of choosing one of the designs as the crest or incorporating elements from multiple designs into the crest. The top five finalists will receive a set of limited-edition bronze battle coins featuring the U.S.S North Dakota.
