"Submarines - Past and Present" is the February program of the New Baltimore Historical Society. Former submariner Dennis Halstead will describe his experience aboard the USS Nautilus during the mid-1960s.
Launched in 1954, the Nautilus was the world's first nuclear-powered submarine. It was also the first sub to transit beneath the North Pole, accomplishing this feat in August 1958. It was decommissioned in 1982 and today is a popular museum in Groton, Conn.
As Electronics Technician Forward, Halstead will describe our submarine fleet's role in preserving the world's peace during the tense Cold War era. Halstead was also aboard during an accidental collision with an American aircraft carrier during exercises in the Atlantic on Veterans Day 1966.
Numerous computer studies have indicated that the entire crew should have perished. "The accident only resulted in one mild injury," Halstead said.
Today, well known in the community, the popular pharmacist has owned and operated Anchor Bay Pharmacy in New Baltimore since 1985. With his late wife, JoAnne, Halstead has been involved in a variety of community organizations. He has been especially active with Bay Rama since 1987 and has served on its board as president and parade chairman.
The program takes place Thursday at 7 p.m. in the First Congregational Church Youth Building located at 36223 Alfred in New Baltimore. Those attending are asked for a $1 donation for this program.
