North Dakotans are being invited to submit design ideas for the crest of the USS North Dakota nuclear submarine being built at two East Coast shipyards.
The crest is unique to each U.S. Navy submarine or ship. For example, the USS Missouri crest features the St. Louis Arch, and the USS Minnesota depicts a Viking.
The Navy and the ship's crew ultimately will decide on the USS North Dakota's crest design. USS North Dakota Committee Chairman Bob Wefald says this is an opportunity for state residents to weigh in. A committee will choose the top five designs to send on to the crew, which will choose one or incorporate elements from several.

The submarine is to be commissioned in 2014.
