US drone strike kills senior Al-Qaeda member – Reuters
A man said to be a key figure organizing operations in the remaining core leadership of Al-Qaeda has been killed in one of two US drone strikes in Pakistan last week, a US official has told Reuters. Aslam Awan was targeted by the attack, both US and Pakistani sources confirmed to the news agency. The drone was directed at what news reports said was a compound near the town of Miranshah in the border province of North Waziristan. The strike broke an undeclared eight-week hiatus in attacks on Pakistan’s tribal areas by drones – a key part of US President Barack Obama’s counter-terrorism strategy. Awan’s killing has not been confirmed officially by Pakistan while a US official claims he is dead. Awan is from the town of Abbottabad where Osama bin Laden was killed last May by a US commando team.
