January 25th - On This Date - Royal Australian Navy


1942

Event #1
HMA Ships CANBERRA, (cruiser), and VAMPIRE, (destroyer), arrived in Singapore, having escorted the liner AQUITANIA, which was carrying troops from Australia.

Event #2
HMAS NIZAM, (destroyer), on an early morning anti-submarine sweep off Trincomalee, Ceylon, in poor visibility, was challenged by a Dutch cruiser. “Have been watching you for the last ten minutes”, the Dutch vessel signalled. NIZAM replied: “Thanks. We have had our guns trained on you for the last half hour.”

1952
HMAS SYDNEY, (aircraft carrier), completed her operations in the Korean War. During the ship’s seven patrols in Korea 269,249 rounds of 20mm armament, 6,359 rocket projectiles, and 902 bombs of 227kg and 454kg were expended. SYDNEY had the honour of being the only Dominion aircraft carrier to be tested in war.

1968
HMAS PERTH, (guided missile destroyer), and USS BORDELON, fired on a highway bridge at Cape St Anne, Vietnam. The ships were ranged by enemy radar and came under heavy fire from North Vietnamese coastal batteries.

1982
HMAS SYDNEY, (guided missile frigate), was severely damaged in a $4 million fire while fitting out at Seattle, USA.

1988
The sail training ship, YOUNG ENDEAVOUR, was presented to Australia, and commissioned. The 200 ton brigantine was a Bi-centennial gift from the United Kingdom to Australia, and is operated by the RAN on behalf of the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme. The vessel was built by Brooke Yachts, Lowestoft, England, at a cost of $3.9 million.
